ABSTRACT

On Master Yun's return from the Festival of Great Singers, he entered the house and, in the company of the witty Samnam, freely vented his accumulated anger by calling his daughter-in-law names behind her back. A little earlier, Chonju Taek happened to be out in the courtyard and she had overheard Master Yun berating his daughter-in-law in vile language. Ko's father-in-law, Master Yun, had shunted her aside, even though she was rightfully entitled to inherit the supervision of the household, and, skipping a generation, he had bestowed that power on the elder grand daughter-in-law. In other words, Ko's own daughter-in-law, the wife of Chongsu, had succeeded Master Yun's wife and had now been put in charge of all the affairs of the family. Under the four-point scheme Master Yun had laid out to embellish the family tree, Chongsu was being nurtured for a county magistracy.
