The Maldive Islands are located 430 miles (692 kilometers) southwest of Sri Lanka in the central Indian Ocean. The islands are spread out in a north-south-oriented rectangular patch across 34,749 square miles (90,000 square kilometers) of remote ocean territory-one of the most spread out countries on the planet. The Maldives are made up of 1,192 small islets, or atolls. Eight hundred of them have some vegetation, while only 200 are large enough to support human habitation.
