ABSTRACT

Death may be created by a divinity in a myth type that involves the first man and woman. There are also myths of death on a larger scale, centering on the death of the world or even of the entire universe. Flood myths belong in the death and rebirth category, as well, since they feature nothing less than the death and rebirth of the world itself. Besides the well-known flood of the Old Testament, there are at least twenty other great floods described in the world's mythology, from Asia to North America. Most of these seem to be linked, as in the biblical account, with human sinfulness and the rebirth of the human race. While the mythology of Wales wasn't written down until Christian times, a great deal of the ancient elements remain, including within this story of Gwion.
