ABSTRACT
The public servants who deliver a community’s emergency medical services (EMS) perform the crucial life-or-death function of stabilizing patients—often the victims of serious illness or injury—and transporting them quickly to a hospital. In urban areas, the fire department usually performs a vital role either as primary EMS provider or, when others have primary EMS responsibility, as first responder. 1
