ABSTRACT

Most discussions on architecture are concerned with traditional buildings of brick, stone, wood, or some other conventional material. But some architecture worth learning about is designed to be operational for a limited period of time. Ice is a distinct solid with specific intrinsic properties. Water, like all other types of matter, comes in three basic states: solid, liquid, and gas. Igloos and snow houses have been the traditional dwellings in arctic areas for at least hundreds of years and perhaps much longer. Igloos are a common sight in several parts of the world, but they are exotic and intriguing structures to people who have never seen them up close. The Ice Palace was reportedly used by Empress Anna Ivanova for entertaining during the festivities following the Russian defeat of Turkey. A copy of the Ice Palace was built in 2000 for a Russian documentary production, using techniques similar to the original.
