ABSTRACT

The Millennium Wheel was created by a team of designers and was originally intended as a five-year display. It attracted so many visitors that its permit was extended indefinitely. The structure of the Millennium Wheel is similar to that of a bicycle wheel. A stiff outer metal rim uses tie rods as its primary means of structural support; these bars carry a tension force that helps keep the rim in a stable position. The Millennium Wheel's location meant that it had to be built right on the river. Another popular amusement park ride, the roller coaster, operates entirely differently from Ferris wheel. A roller coaster consists of several linked passenger cars that run on a looping track, typically at very high speeds. The only part of the ride that requires powered assistance is at the very beginning when cars are usually tugged up a steep incline. By the time they reach the top, they have a supply of potential energy.
