ABSTRACT

As I stepped within the house that had previously welcomed me so gaily I was greeted by wailing cries that made me shudder. I slept that night with my mother-in-law and awoke early at the sound of a long-drawn wail. “Oh Baba, my Baba, where are you?” cried my grandmother-in-law, who had lost her only child. My mother-in-law joined in wordless wails while the sisters-in-law crooned in grief. There were a few house guests and they too wailed aloud till the whole house was filled with mourning cries. I shivered anew in the cold grey dawn.
