ABSTRACT

Jushi-di was renowned as the “bride’s decorator” and she took her work seriously. First she cleaned my face with a homemade cream, freshly prepared every day with the thick soft skin of milk that had been boiled and allowed to cool, mixed with a liberal amount of orange peel paste and a sprinkling of flour. The cream rolled off like putty, carrying away all impurities. She combed out my hair and worked with a fine comb till my scalp tingled and then burned under its sharp teeth. Then, pursing her lips, she made a center parting with meticulous care.
