ABSTRACT
Ruler credited with uniting much of the Indian subcontinent (present-day India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka). All but the southern tip of what is now India and Sri Lanka came under his single rule. He is also credited with popularizing the Buddhist religion in the region. Historians commonly refer to him as “Ashoka the Great” in recognition of his central place in the histories of both India and Buddhism.
