ABSTRACT
Italian navigator whose voyages of discovery for Spain opened the way for European exploration and colonization of the Americas. One of the first European explorers of the “New World,” Columbus played an important role in bringing great wealth to Spain and opening the Americas to European settlement. Yet his activities in the Americas had a negative impact on the native peoples living there.
