ABSTRACT
Leader of a nomadic tribe called the Huns, whose extensive fifth-century empire covered most of what is now central and eastern Europe, all of Ukraine, and Russia west of the Ural Mountains. Attila’s hordes terrorized Europe, displacing local peoples and forcing the mighty Roman Empire to pay tribute. Attila was a fierce and pitiless warrior whose use of terror as a tactic of conquest earned him the nickname “Scourge of God.”
