Longest-reigning king of France; known as the “Sun King” because of the splendor of his royal court. Under Louis XIV, who ruled France from 1643 to 1715, the French monarchy reached the peak of its power and prestige. Louis also made France the major political power in Europe. He ruled with absolute power, claiming that the king had a “divine right” to rule that was given by God.
