ABSTRACT
Ninth ruler of the Aztec Empire of Mexico, ruling from 1502 to 1520 at the magnificent city of Tenochtitlán. The best known of all Aztec rulers, Moctezuma II was overthrown by Spanish conquerors, known as conquistadors, led by the explorer Hernán Cortés. Moctezuma’s overthrow was soon followed by the end of the Aztec Empire and the beginning of Spanish rule in Mexico.
