ABSTRACT

African military leader who ruled the Songhai Empire of West Africa. During his more than 30 years on the throne, Askia expanded Songhai, reorganized its government, and transformed it into a predominantly Muslim kingdom. During his rule, Songhai dominated West Africa; its rapid expansion of trade helped unite the region and link it to other parts of Africa and the world. By the time of his death, Askia had created the largest and wealthiest of all the kingdoms of West Africa.
