ABSTRACT
Russian czar, or king, who ruled from 1682 to 1725. One of the greatest rulers in Russian history, Peter I is remembered mainly for his program of westernization to make Russia more like the countries of Western Europe. In doing so, he helped turn Russia into a major political and military power that ultimately controlled nearly all of northern Europe and northern Asia.
