The founder and first president of modern Turkey. After World War I (1914–1918), Ataturk ended the outdated Ottoman Empire, which had lasted more than six centuries, and created the Republic of Turkey in 1923. During his 15-year presidency, he introduced sweeping political, social, and cultural reforms aimed at modernizing the nation.
