The sixteenth president of the United States and an inspiring leader who shepherded the nation through the Civil War (1861–1865). Lincoln’s leadership saved the Union, and his Emancipation Proclamation (1863) ended the practice of slavery in the United States. Although Lincoln had little formal education, many historians consider him the nation’s greatest president.
