Leader of the Chinese Communist Party and head of the People’s Republic of China from 1949 until his death in 1976. Mao Zedong was the major theorist of Chinese communism and still is regarded with veneration in China. Mao became the Chinese Communist Party’s most important leader by defeating the nationalist Chiang Kai-shek and overhauling China’s economy.
