Becoming a Photographer book
Lewis Hine began photographing school events, which included the dances and the club meetings, as well as the students working in the school carpentry shop and taking instruction in an art class. The program was partly designed as the vocational training. It taught students how to become photographers, providing them with a possible occupation after they graduated from school. Finally, Hine wanted his students to sharpen their perceptions and discipline themselves to look at the world more closely—skills that would help them later in life. “This sharpening of vision,” he wrote, “to a better appreciation of the beauties [of nature].” Eventually, Hine published the articles about his unique camera course, so that others could learn about it. “The fundamental aim of the course is to help the pupils to a better appreciation of the good photography and how to attain it.”.
