ABSTRACT

The concern of this chapter is to examine the labor-force participation rates (LFPRs) of different groups and how these rates affect the supply of labor. It will be recalled that some basic facts relating to gender, age, and racial differences in labor-force participation were presented in chapter 2, as a basis for examining rates of unemployment. What remains to be explained therefore is the economic rationale that underlies the gender, age, and racial differences among participants.
