ABSTRACT
Until recent years, "anti-Americanism"l in South Korea seemed like an oxymoron to many observers both within and outside the country. After all, for about half a century, Koreans shared ties of blood through the loss of Korean and American lives in the Korean War, a common enemy, and amoral and military commitment to the defense and prosperity of South Korea. For most of those fifty years, Koreans have been known to "love" Americans, welcoming them with open hearts in gratitude and friendship for American military and economic aid during their struggling years and admiring many aspects of American political and cultural life. Korea was one of the few pi aces in the world where "Yankee go horne" was not supposed to be uttered.
