Trumbull’s arrest. Since he had taken arms in America against the king, they said, he
should be charged with treason.
Trumbull knew that West was admired and influential in Britain. If Trumbull was
accepted as a pupil of the king’s historical painter, it surely would mean a successful
future for the young artist. At least, the Loyalists might stop calling for his arrest.
