That June, he watched through a field telescope as British troops stormed and cap-
tured American defenses in a bloody clash known as the Battle of Bunker (or Bunker’s)
Hill. More than 1,000 British and 400 Americans were casualties that day. The fierce-
ness of the battle appalled both sides.
