ABSTRACT
In northern New York, a powerful British army captured Fort Ticonderoga, which
the Patriots had abandoned without a fight. The British commander, General John
Burgoyne, had discovered the fort’s weakness. As Trumbull had warned, Mount Defi-
ance had become occupied by the enemy and after that Ticonderoga was doomed.
