ABSTRACT

The third subperiod (1981-90) represents the mid-career stages of the thirty alumni, covering the age span from their early forties through to the age of fifty or so. According to Schein , this stage is characterized by career stabilization and/or a mid-career crisis. Career stabilization means that one establishes a clear identity in the organization and accepts higher levels of responsibility. At the same time, for many people, this is aperiod of crisis in which a major reassessment of one's progress is made relative to one 's ambitions. Decisions are made to level off, change careers, or forge ahead to higher challenges.
