ABSTRACT

The central question addressed in this book was whether Japanese business and management practices as weIl as the work lives of women will converge toward the Western model or will remain "uniquely Japanese" (Chapter 1). As the first step to answer this central question a number of key questions were identified and developed into interview guidelines (Prologue):

• To what extent is Japanese management unique? • To what extent do attitudinal attributes alleged to be unique to Japanese,

such as harmony, hierarchy acceptance, benevolence, loyalty, and love for leaming, affect Japanese management?
