ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the types of i-deals employees negotiate. It begins with the actual events in the career of one highly marketable worker to illustrate the different roles i-deals can play in employment. Steve Miller's unique initial ex ante i-deal with Fujitsu was sparked by his distinctive interests, and nurtured by the imaginative response of Fujitsu to the unusual opportunity that employing Steve presented. His existing IBM job's focuses on sales brought with it travel and business-unit responsibilities that gave Steve little time at home and little time for creative work. Job postings or new project start-ups can make it easier for employees to argue that their request for an i-deal benefits the employer, too. They addresses the implications that threat-based i-deals have for repeat bargaining. I-deals provide employees with valued personal choice and flexibility while permitting employers to attract, motivate, develop, and retain valued workers. Their discussion of i-deals has focuses on discrete arrangements made on single occasions.
