ABSTRACT

The deepest and largest freshwater lake on the planet sits in southeastern Russia. Lake Baikal hosts depths of 5,315 feet (1,620 meters) and has a volume of 5,500 cubic miles (22,925 cubic kilometers). Forming a crescent half-moon shape, the lake is 395 miles (636 kilometers) long north to south by 30 miles (48 kilometers) wide east to west.
