ABSTRACT

The last two centuries have revealed a range of complex environmental challenges to forest communities across the planet. Addressing illegal logging, especially on land that is publicly owned, is a constant challenge. In addition to human-generated pollution such as vehicle and factory emissions, deforestation also has played a prominent role in global warming and climate change. While the encouragement to protect southern forests has come predominantly from countries in the Northern Hemisphere, deforestation often has been due to the Northern Hemisphere's economic demand for tropical wood products. In addition to human-generated pollution such as vehicle and factory emissions, deforestation also has played a prominent role in global warming and climate change. Although the issue of climate change has taken center stage in the international community, the measures taken to reduce deforestation represent a significant positive step for local communities. In Central America, new roads are causing forest losses.
