ABSTRACT

Even wood, soil, and furniture pieces should be collected, since they could hold residues of the explosive used. These dusty specimens are then carefully analyzed for fragments of the bomb, often using a fine wire screen to sift the debris. If tiny pieces are found, or even if no fragments are found, the blast was probably caused by a high explosive. In many cases, a surprising amount of a bomb’s components-batteries, a clockwork mechanism, wires-are found. Sniffer dogs and devices that detect vapors help to locate explosives.
