ABSTRACT

During the 19th and early 20th centuries the political maps of the world were drawn and redrawn as a result of treaties and agreements reached by victors in international disputes, the provisions of which were then imposed on the vanquished. The United Nations (UN) originated from a conference held at Dumbarton Oaks, Washington, DC, between World War II allies, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, and the United States, at the end of September and the beginning of October, 1944. The Economic and Social Council is responsible for economic, social, cultural, educational, health, and related matters. Working directly within the United Nations (UN) organizational structure are a number of specialized agencies, funded by the UN through contributions from the 185 member states. The World Health Organization (WHO) was founded in April 1948. Its main purpose is to assist all peoples in attaining the highest possible levels of health.
