ABSTRACT

Northern and Western Europe The region Northern and Western Europe, as we have defined it, stretches from the Arctic Ocean in the north to the Mediterranean Sea in the south, and from the Atlantic Ocean in the west to the Adriatic in the east. It includes 23 nation-states, whose total populations amount to over 370 million, or 80 million more than the total number of people inhabiting the whole of the North American continent. However, the land area occupied by these 23 countries is less than a fifth of that within the boundaries of the United States and Canada and accounts for only 2.7o/o of the world's total land area. We are, therefore, looking at a comparatively large region, fairly densely populated, but with this density greatest near the geographical center and discernibly thinning out at the peripheries.
