ABSTRACT

The largest city and port in Ivory Coast, Abidjan is situated on a number of islands and parts of the mainland in series of lagoons along the southeast coast of the country. The city has an area of 215 square miles (580 square kilometers). It is roughly 525 miles west of Lagos, Nigeria, and 1,050 miles southeast of Dakar. Located at sea level and several degrees north of the equator, Abidjan has a hot and humid tropical climate. The year-round average is 80.5 degrees Fahrenheit (26.9 degrees Celsius), with little variation between seasons. January temperatures average 80.5 degrees Fahrenheit (26.9 degrees Celsius) and July temperatures average 78 degrees Fahrenheit (25.5 degrees Celsius). The city receives roughly 77.1 inches (1,958 millimeters) of rain annually, mostly in the summer months.
