When Harding died suddenly in 1923, Coolidge became president. Grace Coolidge was a popular hostess for her husband in Washington and served as a volunteer for the Red Cross and other charities. After Coolidge left the White House in 1929, the couple retired to Northampton. In 1931 Grace Coolidge was honored as one of America’s 12 greatest living women by the National Institute of Social Sciences because of her “ fi ne personal infl uence exerted as First Lady of the Land.”
