ABSTRACT

WALKER, ALICE (b. 1944) Writer. Alice Walker was one of eight children born to Willie Lee and Minnie Tallulah (Grant) Walker, poor sharecroppers living in Eatonton,

Georgia. When she was eight, one of Walker’s brothers accidently shot her in the eye with a BB gun. She lost sight in one eye and was disfi gured by scar tissue around the wound. Ashamed of

her appearance, Walker began to withdraw from social contact. Ironically, this period in her life turned out to be important because it led her to become an avid reader and writer. When she was 14, Walker had surgery to remove the scar tissue.
