ABSTRACT

The topic of American women and reformmovements in the nineteenth century isvast: The era truly was unlike any other for its largely nonviolent, vitally important social change. Innovative ideas ran the alphabetical gamut from abolitionism to utopianism, with dozens of issues in between. Never before, anywhere, did so many people develop so many creative concepts to improve life for masses of people-and more than that, devote themselves to implementing these ideas. This was particularly true of women, who moved in large numbers from their home-based lives into the public arena.
