ABSTRACT
Race and SLAVERY left African-Americanwomen in the antebellum period (1820-1860) vulnerable to flagrant abuses. Most were able to survive their enslavement and preserve their dignity and culture. Some did not. At times, women were so damaged by slavery that they preferred death to survival.
