FACTORIES AND FACTORY WORKERS Industrial manufacturing facilities and laborers. The factory system of labor is one in which industrial workers join together to complete work faster and cheaper than they could individually. A result of the INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION, the factory system in the United States helped propel the nation to a position of great economic, political, and technological power in the nineteenth century. Between 1860 and 1870, the number of factories in the Northern United States increased by 80 percent.
