ABSTRACT

In 1966, a Muslim group in northern Chad, the Front de Libération Nationale du Tchad (FROLINAT, its French acronym), led a rebellion against Chad’s government, gaining some sympathy from Muslims across the border in Libya. Then in 1969, Muammar Qaddafi took over the Libyan government in a coup. Almost immediately, he began support for FROLINAT in northern Chad. After 1971, the rebels received military supplies and the use of bases in southern Libya. This was the beginning of Libya’s involvement with Chad.
