ABSTRACT

The civil rights movement ranks at the forefront ofepochal events in American history, including the Revolutionary War and the Civil War. This section focuses on the scope and complexities of the U.S. civil rights movement, from the 1865 post-Civil War Reconstruction period through the 1960s upsurge in mass protest and civil unrest. The enactment of transformative civil rights legislation and shifts in racialethnic political power and leadership during the twentieth century are highlighted and grounded in major historical conflicts, outlining more than a hundred years of intense struggle for racial justice.
