ABSTRACT
THE EFFORT to understand the relationship between economics and politics has a long history. Aristotle made the classic observation that particular political regime types are characteristically found correlated with certain economic structures. But the modern effort to relate changes in political regimes to changes in the underlying economic structure takes off largely from the grand theorizing of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, particularly that done by Karl Marx and Max Weber.
