Jakobson, Roman (18961982) Moscow-born American linguist well-known for his work on communication theory, often quoted in media studies. Jakobson saw language as an adaptive communicative instrument serving human needs and whims, and influenced by the structure of cultural codes. A comprehensive collection of his writings can be found in Selected Writings (1971-1982).
