ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts covered in this book. The book explores some of the complexities of crisis and disasters. Crisis, disaster, and risk for current and future policy makers considers the multiple layers of any disaster but not merely focus on the short-term factors. The book has four critical starting points: enhancing institutional reflexivity; building an appreciation of risk; understanding disasters and crisis as part of our reality; and identifying means to continuously invest in infrastructure. Continued infrastructure investment to identify and prepare for possible crisis is a central strategy that will help manage the risks and perhaps the realities that we will encounter in the future. Since late-modern realities will continue to bring numerous potential risks for humankind, policy makers and those influencing political and administrative processes will need to continue to develop means for taking into account, and preparing for, the crisis that will encounter in the foreseeable future.
