Many people feel very strongly about their faith. Whether one is a believer or a nonbeliever, it is undeniable that for millions of citizens worldwide religion provides a meaningful and valuable foundation for life. Places of worship are sanctuaries and the ability to ﬁnd refuge and comfort in the walls of churches and synagogues should be a birthright for all people. Many of us belong to a church or synagogue and speak with pride of our particular place of worship and those who lead our congregations. We have seen people point to a building and heard them say with a sense of belonging, “That is my father’s church,” or “This is my synagogue,” or “We are very fortunate to have Pastor Paul for our congregation.” It is important for all believers to trust that the place they go to seek spiritual comfort is indeed inviolable and sacrosanct.
