A private boarding school in New England prided itself on a disciplined approach to education for young women. Located in an affluent suburb, the school’s rules were strict, protocol clearly articulated, and proscriptions numerous. Many parents sought out the school for their daughters precisely because of the regimen. The headmaster’s approach to education would be considered unenlightened by many contemporary educators. Nevertheless parents enjoyed listening to his statements at the beginning of each school year assuring students and parents-explicitly with unambiguous word choice and implicitly with imperious intonation-that this was a school where young women adhered to rules and became educated ladies.
