ABSTRACT
World War II opened a new chapter in the history of relations between the Soviet government and the Russian Orthodox Church. For the first time since the creation of the socialist state, the regime attempted to abandon policies aimed at destroying the Russian Orthodox Church as a social institution and moved toward constructive dialog with the church.
