ABSTRACT

We are at a key turning point in history. The turbulent events of the twentieth century have ended with the close of the Cold War. It is likely that the twenty-first century will be one of more intense competition and power shifts. At the same time, the dawn of peaceful devel opment for all mankind is also in sight. Both the United States and China, respectively the richest and most developed country and the most populated developing country, bear a large burden of responsibility for the future of humanity. The whole world is focusing on the prospects for Sino-American relations in the twenty-first century, and opinions vary widely. However, human beings are intelligent creatures and possess the power of choice; decision-making is perhaps their most important activity. To make these choices and carry them out is to make history. The Coming Conflict with China by Richard Bernstein and Ross Munro is one of several works making analyses and predictions about the future of Sino-American relations. Are the analyses correct? Are the predictions accurate?
