ABSTRACT
The first broad categorization of all cases was suggested by Robert Stake in 1994 and is based on the scale of the case study. He concluded that cases can be grouped into three categories or types of studies based on the intent of their research design: intrinsic, instrumental, and collective. Intrinsic case studies are the most narrow in scale, whereas collective studies have the greatest scale.
