ABSTRACT

The case research method is a way of examining one or a small number of cases of a phenomenon in considerable detail. It can involve a number of different data collection methods, but will more than likely involve personal interviews, participant observation, and/or the analysis of documents or other archival materials. Like other methods, case research may be used for exploratory, descriptive, or explanatory purposes (Johnson, Joslyn, and Reynolds 2001). This chapter describes processes that researchers follow when carrying out case research in both single-case and multicase research designs.
