ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the autobiography of Carolina Maria de Jesus, nicknamed Bitita, which includes details about her experiences during her school. Carolina mother went to wash clothes at Mr. Jose Saturnino's house, and his wife, Dona Mariquinha, told her mother to put her in school. Carolina only went to see what school was. When Carolina and her mother entered the school, Carolina was scared. Carolina teacher, Dona Lonita Solvina, insisted that she learn how to read. When Carolina missed class, the teacher sent a student to look for her at home. Carolina decided to study diligently, understanding that one even thank someone when they want to teach student. Carolina understood that she was being disrespectful of Dona Lonita, trying her patience. Carolina became one of the best students in the class. Dona Lonita says that her white students are more studious than her black students.
